Tallgrass Surgical Weight Loss Solutions:
How Does A Lap Band Work?
In a lap band procedure, the band is
surgically placed around the upper portion of
the stomach, creating a smaller stomach pouch.
The benefit of this procedure is that the
patient feels "full" quicker, and is satisfied
with smaller amounts of food during a meal.
Furthermore, there is no cutting or "stapling"
of the stomach. As a result, lap band
procedures are the least traumatic of all weight
loss surgeries.
During the
surgery, several small incisions are made, enabling
the use of long, thin instruments to implant the
lap band. With smaller incisions, patients
usually experience less pain and scarring when
compared to the larger incisions of a major surgery.
An additional benefit is less hospitalization time,
with most patients able to return home the same day
as the procedure. Typically within a week,
most patients may resume normal activities.
As seen below
in a short film, the procedure utilizes an
adjustable silicone band which is connected by a
catheter to an access port placed on the wall of the
abdomen inside the body. The port gives the
surgeon the ability to adjust the size of the band,
which can control the patient's consumption of food.
